The Lang Vay Round

In honor of Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman’s trek around the world in The Long Way Round, we might need to change the title of our blog. This is too good to pass up.

On The Way To Dong Ha

After our amazing bike ride through the mountains to Hue, we were en route to Dong Ha, which was to be used as a basecamp for our visits to the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone).

We recap a little on our ride and see a sign that wishes us well.

Road to Hue.

It doesn’t get much better than this. The road to Hue is a beautiful mountain road with spectacular views and exhilarating turns. Roads like this sometimes get spoiled when you have to share the road with lorries.

Recently, they built a tunnel that goes directly through the mountain, thus leaving the mountain road for those looking to enjoy the ride. And enjoy we did.

Road to Hoi An.

Another daunting 300km biking trip with only one road error – my front brake got disconnected – and we’re here in Hoi An, one of Vietnam’s most tourist market centers.

We tried to make this trek all in the light but failed. We ended up driving for about 1.5 hours in the dark, which is never fun for anyone involved. Perhaps on a smaller road, but Highway 1A is just a nightmare. Worst yet, Adam and my’s helmet lenses are tinted so we’re screwed either way. We either leave it down and not be able to see anything, or we leave it up and get shotgun blasted with bugs in our eyes every few seconds. And then they get stuck in our helmet and crawl around our ears and stuff. Not nice.

Anyway, we’re here now and we’re staying at An Huy Hotel. Watching The Proposal with Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock; drinking beer. Luxury after what we’ve been through.

Our British buddies (Paul, Dave “Skulley”, Chris, and Chris) had a rough day. Got their bikes tuned and had to come back to the mechanics to fix their horn. Then Chris’ chain came off or something. Haven’t heard everything yet, but we hope they’re all right.

Arrived in Quy Nhon Today. All Is Well.

Just a quick post to let everyone know we’ve arrived in Quy Nhon after a 240Km ride today. Everything went very smooth actually, except for two things:

1) Adam didn’t get to ride his Ostrich (we ended up going to the monkey island instead and the last ferry to the Ostrich island was at 9 in the morning.)

2) Eoin got a puncture on his rear tire about 100 km away from Quy Nhon. We were going to try and fix it ourselves but we were about 3 km away from a small town so Adam and Rob rode in and got a mechanic to come back and get the tire, bring it back to his shop to fix it and then it bring it back to the bike on the highway. 150,000 dong later, we’re on our way.

We were able to meet with the English blokes at their hotel – nice guest hotel – so we’re gonna go and grab some drinks and eats at the Kiwi bar in town.
